OHL
CUP SHOWCASE TOURNAMENT
The recent
OHL Cup Showcase Tournament, held March 23-27 at the Herb Carnegie Centennial
Arena in North York, proved to be a showcase for several top prospects.
The Toronto Marlies, stacked with fabulous talent, steamrolled the field
en route to the title. There was plenty of attention on superb Marlies
1990 C John Tavares, but his teammate Sam Gagner, son of former NHLer
Dave, was the stand-out in this field and deservedly took home MVP honours.
Here is our look at how some of the top players fared:
Sam
Gagner/RC - Marlies.
Tremendous all weekend; not the biggest size-wise but plays a bigger
man's game; spins off contact well; strong skater with excellent puck
skills; can finish and distribute with equal aplomb; very quick release
and pinpoint accuracy; great snap shot; throws soft saucer passes right
on the tape; rumoured to be heading stateside to USHL.
Lukas
Pither/LC - Clarington.
After a great OMHA championship the weekend before, Pither kept
it rolling here; outstanding offensive talent; deadly sniper; doesn't
need much room to operate; tall and lanky, does need to add some upper
body strength; can get pushed around a bit; pushed back a bit more this
week and was more assertive; very reminiscent of David Legwand.
Matt
Smyth/RC/RW - Markham Islanders.
Deadly from the dot in; can spot his snap shot; scores with pro-style
release; doesn't fight through checks enough; lacking size and strength;
very good feet; releases from defensive zone early when he bothers to
check in at all; one-dimensional player, but is very good at that dimension.
Jake
Muzzin/LD - Brantford.
Huge, mean blue-liner wasn't at his best here; struggled a bit
with gap control; tried doing too much; didn't separate from his man well
at all; threw a couple outstanding breakout passes; wasn't as physical
as we've seen him in the past; still a very raw talent with tremendous
upside.
Wilson
Ngai/RD - Marlies.
Great size; outstanding skater with crisp pivots and turns; holds
the puck too long, needs to make his passes on-time; very solid passer,
usually right on the tape; inconsistent physical play; looks very easy
for him due to size and skating; the big question we have is does he have
the mentality to become a tougher defenceman; needs to be much more consistently
physical to maximize his talents.
Bryan
Cameron/RC/RW - Marlies.
Great skating with superb change of direction; quick feet with
excellent acceleration; can make plays at top gear; not a natural finisher;
very good stick handler; very smart player; leader; has to watch his tie-ups
after taking draws.
John
Tavares/LC - Marlies (1990 DOB).
Not at his finest but still played ok; works hard; great size and
skill package; unselfish; can make moves at speed; quick lateral edges;
great hands in tight; gets to the net; strong on stick; competes all the
time whistle to whistle; got smoked in open ice by Murphy of Belle Tire
but came right back; tough kid.
Drew
Doughty/LD - London.
Big and very mobile; always thinking offence; very good passer;
threw perfect tape-to-tape, cross-ice pass through traffic for tap-in
goal; needs to assert himself more in the defensive end; will need coaching
on his defensive play.
Robert
Bortozzo/RD - Thunder Bay.
Big but raw physically; needs to add leg and upper body strength;
can get pushed around a bit; very good offensive instincts; knows when
to jump; pretty fair skater has recoverability; struggles with gap control;
doesn't pin well; once he fills out a bit has the chance to be an outstanding
player.
Drew
Schiestel/LD - Hamilton Reps.
Great size; excellent long striding skater; all offence; pushes
the action all the time; has to pick his spots better; very good at jumping
into slot, contributes to offence; excellent shot; reads plays and gets
into defensive passing lanes well; gap control generally ok but does have
some troubles with speed rush, especially on the right wing side; when
he plays in control, look out.
Brad
Pawlowski/RD - Thunder Bay.
Big aggressive defenseman, prototype T-Bay blue-liner; loves to
step up for the big hit, but gives up position at the wrong time to do
it; pretty good outlet passes; hard, inaccurate point shot; does tend
to try low percentage plays; a bit stiff-legged in his skating; unafraid
to drop the gloves as he did against Toronto Red Wings, does it pretty
well; reminds us of former T-B King Mitch Maunu.
Akim
Aliu/RW - Marlies.
We like him better on the wing; big, strong and fast but doesn't
possess outstanding hockey sense; hits hard; great puck pursuit; has some
skills and a decent shot; injured his left leg/ankle when hit by Belle
Tire's Corey Tropp, looked serious; missed the last round robin game plus
the playoffs; could affect draft status.
Chris
Terry/LC - Markham Islanders.
Outstanding week; really helped his cause; smooth stride with excellent
acceleration and mobility; gets involved much more than earlier in season;
long and lanky; much more physical; great dangles, dynamic talent; can
finish and distribute equally well.
Jordan
Skellett/LC - London.
We loved him as a possible sleeper before he came on like gangbusters
this week; picked up slack for missing captain Justin Taylor; puck poise;
great shot; scored pro-style goals on heavy slappers that were spotted
perfectly in corners; unselfish; smart; leader; always on the puck; played
himself into top two round selection.
Zach
Harnden/LW - Thunder Bay.
First time seeing the big power winger this season after he missed
most of the campaign with injury; outstanding size/strength combo; pretty
good skater with long powerful stride; fights through checks but isn't
an overly physical presence; gets to the net, pretty good finisher; long
stick and reach, uses them well.
Michael
Colwill/RW - Markham Islanders.
Great hustle and energy; team captain is good on-ice leader but
does tend to lose his temper at times; has to learn to harness it more;
dangerous in open ice; scored two-man SHG after blocking shot and beating
defense to loose puck; lacks some size but is strong and plays a much
bigger game.
Darryl
Borden/G-L - Brantford.
The class of this year's goaltending crop; great size; lefty; lightning-quick
legs and pads; very fast up-to-down-to-up; very poised and calm; great
body language; comes up big; tremendous upside.
Scott
Timmins/LC - Hamilton Reps.
We love this kid; not the biggest or strongest but plays with heart
and passion; bulls his way to the net and can really finish when he gets
there; great stops/starts; works his tail off; very shifty; stride is
a bit choppy but great acceleration; dangerous nearly every time he hits
the ice.
Andrew
Wilson/RW - London.
Very good skater; big kid with long stride; fighting his way to
the net with much more gusto than we saw earlier this year; much more
determined; playing much more aggressively and using his size to his advantage;
very good upside.
Josh
Bailey/C-LW - Clarington.
Solid player in all three zones; very strong leadership qualities,
captain of his team; warrior; very good set-up man, adept at drawing defence
to him before dishing off; smart; makes the right play at the right time.
Brendan
Smith/LD - Marlies.
We never thought much about him until this weekend; has grown and
gotten much stronger on his skates and stick; not getting pushed around
like earlier; loves to jump into play; moving full-time back to the blue
line after bouncing around between "D" and wing looks to have calmed his
game; does need to make better decisions; has come a long way in a short
time; some may like him very high this year due to huge improvements.
Patrick
Daley/RW - Marlies.
Decent size; pretty fair skill set; strength improving, able to
assert himself more often now; competes well; throws smart, on-time passes;
played much more physically and was very effective.
Trevor
Cann/G - Mississauga Senators.
Big kid with massive pads; blots out a lot of net; decent athletically
as well as having great size; very calm; great body language, even after
giving up soft goal; plays angles very well; stays square.
Justin
Vaive/LW - Marlies.
Tall and lanky, still a bit awkward and gangly, but balance is improving;
great work ethic; tough along wall and in front of net; not a great skater;
effort is there whistle-to-whistle; may not be a star but will be an important
contributor; very good complementary player.
Dale
Mitchell/C-RW - Mississauga Senators.
Gets his nose dirty; quick feet with excellent edging and change
of direction; reads play well; excellent on PK; finds open ice in offensive
zone; looks for homerun pass too often.
Adam
Zamec/LW - London.
Goal scorer's mentality; huge shot; has to get it on net a bit
more consistently; very good passer as well; playing a much more physical
style, paying the price to make plays; showing much more hustle and a
more rounded game.
Doug
Leaverton/LD - Cleveland.
Played with Belle Tire at OHL Cup because of numerous BT injuries;
big kid who doesn't always play big; ok skating but lacks acceleration;
plays with little control in defensive end; passing and stick skills are
ok; decision-making not a strong suit; may be better as a forward.
Travis
Oleksuk/LC - Thunder Bay.
A bit of a disappointment; doesn't show a lot of jam; has lots of
skills; excellent skater; always seems to be attacking from the outside,
never goes into high traffic areas.
Daniel
Lombardi/LW - Mississauga Senators.
Shows lots of flash and speed; outstanding acceleration; hustles;
very selfish player; lacking self-control; makes poor decisions and takes
bad penalties; very frustrating; has the tools to become a very good OHLer
but attitude is a problem.
Jamie
Arniel/RC - Kingston.
Great wheels; moves very well laterally; excellent stops and starts;
gets to the net and makes plays at top gear; playing much more physically;
always had the talent, his fortitude was the big question mark; seems
to be answering that question; his team played poorly but he never gave
up; gamer.
Leigh
Salters/LW - London.
Huge power forward; played with a bit of a physical edge here; was
excellent on the wall but showed no offensive creativity or drive; very
inconsistent; boom or bust type of guy.
Mike
McGurk/RD - Hamilton Reps.
Great size; loves to lug the puck; goes with it way too often; has
to pick spots better; seemed a bit heavy-footed here, looked slow; gets
flat-footed in defensive end; not great defensively but has size and strength;
needs to be reined in a bit and could be pretty good.
Anthony
Soboczynski/LW - Elgin-Middlesex.
Very quick hands; doesn't need a lot of room to operate; good size;
has every tool; doesn't assert himself at all; needs to show more cajones;
too much perimetre play; first round skills.
Andrew
Merrett/RW - Toronto Red Wings.
Good size; thick and strong; handles puck very well; makes good
decisions; smart; unselfish; goes hard to net with stick down; forces
his will; very good potential.
Jeremy
Smith/G - Belle Tire.
Very good size; outstanding athleticism; acrobatic; defence in front
of him is poor, has to face many quality chances; flexible; tends to over-commit;
down early sometimes; calm; maintains good body language even after getting
bombarded; very good upside.
Geoff
Guimond/RW - Mississauga Senators.
Quick; good size; aggressive; wins 1-on-1 battles; pretty fair skill
set; at worst third line banger who can change momentum.
Jim
Hutchinson/RW - Grey Bruce.
Great size and strength; runs through people; very effective on
forecheck; lacks some speed and quickness; not very agile; pretty fair
hands in tight; gets to the net, takes straight-line course; a sleeper
if he picks up his skating.
Kevin
Mole/LD - Mississauga Senators.
Comes with lots of hype but doesn't always show through in performance;
makes poor choices; vulnerable one-on-one, especially to outside speed;
doesn't move feet well; not very defensively aware; has some physical
tools but has to put it all back together.
Kory
Kuipers/LW - Elgin-Middlesex.
Great size and strength; lacks some quickness, feet a bit heavy;
responsible defensively; good effort all around; strong on his skates;
will hit; pretty good shot; has some upside.
Dustin
Fummerton/RW - Thunder Bay.
Little waterbug didn't have much finish this week; seemed to get
frustrated more than we've seen in the past; a real favourite for his
jam and attitude; extremely quick acceleration.
Mike
Murphy/G - Kingston.
Cocky, which can be a good trait; physically weak, needs to get
stronger to handle traffic more effectively; lost concentration at times;
flashy; makes big saves; tends to make easy saves look more difficult;
very quick down-to-up; scrambly and panicky at times.
Cory
Tamblyn/RC - Toronto Red Wings.
Back after missing much of the season with broken leg; edges well;
excellent passes; quick feet; a lot of energy; loves to draw the defence
to him then dish; very good player.
Adam
Greene/LW - Kingston.
Goes to net hard and with stick on ice looking for deflections
and rebounds; good size and skating; not as determined as we've seen in
the past; not a great week.
Chris
MacKinnon/LW - Mississauga Senators.
Not great size but quick and determined; great effort; nice skill
set; scores key goals; shifty and tricky; hides in the weeds; leaks out
too much on defence looking for breakaways.
Jeff
Amadio/LD - Mississauga Senators.
Tall and lanky blue-liner needs to add leg strength, can get pushed
around; getting stronger on his skates; long stride; doesn't move feet
well enough in own end on rush right now; not strong on his stick; effort
good; has upside.
Shawn
Frank/RC - Toronto Red Wings.
Pretty solid all around player; hits; plays point on PP; good wheels;
drives to net; quick release; smart in offensive zone; ok on faceoffs;
shields puck well; better finisher than passer; overhandles and looks
for his own shot first.
Corey
Tropp/RW - Belle Tire.
Played with much more physical edge than we've seen previously;
didn't have a great week in offensive zone; can be a very good sniper,
but always looks to shoot first.
Steven
Tarasuk/RD - Marlies.
Calming defensive influence; has some offensive upside as well;
only average size; honest effort; smart first pass; stable; efficient;
good skater with smooth stride; we may be undervaluing him.
Julian
Cimadamore/LC - Mississauga Senators.
Decent all around skills; quick hands; good effort; gets little
things done; good complementary player; doesn't make others better but
can make better players look good.
Louie
Caporusso/LW - Toronto Red Wings.
Quick and skilled; very inconsistent; doesn't always show up; not
big or strong but has loads of talent - when he brings it, he is very
good.
Kory
Nagy/LC - Brantford.
Not the most talented kid but gets everything out of what he has;
competes very well; team captain and leader; hard work and hustle; has
decent stick skills and good hockey sense; not much of a finisher; plays
bigger than his size.
Joe
Pleckaitis/LW - Toronto Red Wings.
Aggressive power winger in the making; quick feet; hits like a truck;
great effort; not overly creative; straight-ahead third line type player
with second line upside.
Carl
Andrews/LD - Clarington.
Very aggressive; loves the big hit; hits hard and often; good first
pass, though offence is not his forte; decent prospect.
Reggie
Traccitto/RD - Mississauga Senators.
Okay size, very good strength; doesn't read plays particularly
well; very aggressive, sometimes stupidly so; skating fair; carries his
hands and stick very high.
Josh
McQuade/LW - Hamilton Bulldogs.
Great hands; short but thick; outstanding slap and snap shots;
can pick spots; underrated; work ethic ok, just not overly aware defensively.
Scott
Murphy/RW - Belle Tire.
Big kid from Georgia starting to improve dramatically with more
high-level experience; using his size well; tattooed Tavares with pretty
good looking open-ice hit but was tossed for it.
Matt
Meszaros/RW - Toronto Red Wings.
Big, wide load kid; conditioning may be an issue; strong base and
stride; bowls over people; bounces off check attempts; lazy passes in
own zone; if conditioning improves could well be a player.
Brad
Albert/LD - Nepean.
Very good player who was injured in his league playdowns; returned
here but was ineffective playing at well under 100%; much better than
he showed here.
Thor
Skalski/RW - Compuware.
We're wondering what happened to him this season; had a great U.S.
Select-15 camp and a quick start to this season, then disappeared; has
tons of skill; great hands; lacks size but is strong and fearless; can
dangle in tight; overhandling the puck and not finishing.
Jordan
Gignac/LW - Hamilton Reps.
Little guy who plays bigger; has speed to get wide and balls to
drive the net; great effort; excellent on the PK.
Kyle
Tront/LC - Thunder Bay.
Big, thin kid beginning to fill out a bit; has some good skills
but doesn't compete well all the time; appears timid; once he gets confidence
in his physical prowess could be very good.
AJ
Jenks/LC - Compuware (1990 D.O.B.).
Underager is Compuware's best player by far; good size; fantastic
skill set; great release; creative; needs to compete more consistently
to become a real stud for next year.
